Signage Series Exhibition View
Signage Series
These works are directly inspired by vintage commercial signage in Montreal. In the large works, all references to the commercial enterprise have been removed, in an attempt to subvert the language of advertising while focusing on the beauty of the antique signage. Traditional and modern woodworking methods have been employed to flatten the object into a nearly two-dimensional work that references trompe l'oeil painting and craft-based art practice. In the smaller works, figurative graphics from the signs are inversely transformed into sculptures, through the process of creating detailed drawings on hardwood, guiding the blocks through a scroll saw, and finishing with sanding and staining.
