Animation Machines
This series is one of the ways in which I have been combining the languages of drawing and sculpture. Some of them are recreations of Victorian optical toys ("Phenakistoscope", "Zoetrope", etc), which are the predecessors of the modern film projector and motion picture cameras. Others are ones where I have reworked the mechanisms of the film projector to make it also interactive. Although I would not consider myself a luddite, I believe some of magical qualities that result from transforming a series of flashing still images into motion have been lost in the digital age.
